Job Description:
The RN role in the Diabetes Education Center will support a comprehensive Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) program that is intended to educate patients and families in the successful self-management of diabetes. The comprehensive program focuses education on diabetes disease process, nutritional management, physical activity, medications, monitoring and use of results, prevention, detection, and treatment of acute and chronic complications, goal setting and problem solving, psychosocial adjustment, preconception care, management during pregnancy, and gestational diabetes management. The RN also provides education on complex and rapid evolving diabetes technology and non-comprehensive program visits, such as, insulin pump assessment and insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring assessment and instruction, clinic-initiated continuous glucose monitoring, blood glucose monitoring/meter instruction, insulin start, change, and dose adjustments, insulin carbohydrate ratios, gestational diabetes, recurrent hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, recurrent hospitalization requiring additional education, annual review, and follow-up diabetes education. Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes patients are served, pediatrics through older adults. The DSMES program is not only nationally recognized but is also accredited by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) where diabetes care is individualized by the RN to meet the unique needs of each patient. This RN role will work collaboratively to maintain ADA recognition standards. Individual and group sessions (face-to-face and virtual) are provided by the RN, as well as follow-up care, and inpatient consultation. The RN role provides face-to-face outreach services at any of the Mayo Clinic SWWI sites, as determined by the practice. The RN role partners closely with Registered Dieticians, Endocrinology, Primary Care, and other members of the multidiciplinary care team to manage those with diabetes. A commitment to ongoing learning is vital to the success of an RN in the Diabetes Education Center due to the rapid evolution of the complex management of diabetes. Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist (CDCES) credential is preferred within two years of employment.
Student or graduate of an accredited, or those in the candidacy process of a BSN program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is required.
Additional Qualifications:
One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
