This position functions as a professional in a complex work area that utilizes cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality data to conduct surveillance on cancer in Michigan and conduct analyses to investigate potentially excessive cancer in specific geographies. They use epidemiological best practices for the purpose of informing public health. This position provides information to the MiTracking Program within the Environmental Health Surveillance Section, other sections within the Division of Environmental Health, and to other divisions within the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health. They are responsible for responding to inquiries about perceived excessive cancer incidence in particular geographical areas, determining if in fact there is an excess, and if so, recommending additional investigative actions. This involves working with the community throughout the process as necessary. This epidemiologist also provides skilled professional epidemiological surge capacity for other divisions in the bureau in the event of public health emergencies such as COVID-19. This role is critical to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of the residents of Michigan.

Education
Possession of a master's degree with a major in epidemiology or public health with a minimum of 8 semester (12 term) graduate-level hours in epidemiology and biostatistics courses.
Experience
Epidemiologist 10
No specific type or amount is required.
Epidemiologist P11
Two years of professional experience carrying out a variety of surveys, investigations, tests, and analyses of human disease and chronic health conditions, including one year equivalent to an Epidemiologist 10.
Possession of a doctorate degree in epidemiology may be substituted for the experience requirement.
Position Location/Remote Office: The physical location of this position is 333 South Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933. Based on operational needs and within established limits, remote work and alternate or hybrid work schedule requests for this position may be considered.
Selected candidates who have been approved to work remotely or a hybrid schedule must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.
Employees will be provided computers to perform state work. Phones may also be provided for necessary communications. If working remotely, employees will be responsible for providing other components of a remote office at their own expense, including:
* A secure work location that allows privacy and prevents distractions.
* A high-speed internet connection of at least 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.
* Suitable lighting, furniture, and utilities.
