The Town of Laurel, Delaware (population 4,200) located in Sussex County, Delaware is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chief of Police. The Town of Laurel, Delaware is a growing and culturally diverse community seeking a police chief with proven leadership and management skills. The successful candidate must also have a background that demonstrates a commitment to fostering effective channels of communication within his/her staff and in the community. The Chief of Police must possess an advanced knowledge of the federal, state, and municipal laws relating to the function of his or her subordinates and department. He or she must have an extensive knowledgeable in police policy, rules and regulations, police standards, fiscal management, police policy, personnel management, and supervisory techniques. The Chief of Police must demonstrate mastery of accepted principles of policing and law enforcement administration. He or she must possess an extensive knowledge of police policy rules, regulations, and standards. He or she must be able to effectively and efficiently plan, direct, and evaluate all department activities. He or she must possess knowledge of inventory and acquisition procedures regarding law enforcement equipment. He or she must be able to communicate effectively within the department, with elected officials, and with the general public. The Chief of Police must conduct the business of his or her office with honesty and integrity and project positive professional image setting the example for all subordinate personnel of the department. Specialized education and training are desirable, such as a Bachelor s degree in law enforcement or related field, or graduation from a specialized Law Enforcement Training Program, such as but not limited to, the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University s School of Staff and Command, and the Southern Police Institute.
Additional professional experience or specialized training may substitute for some or all required education requirements. Minimum 10 years experience of satisfactory service in law enforcement, with a minimum of five year s supervisory experience. Must be of good reputation and character, and must pass a rigorous background check. A successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to work closely with elected official, municipal administrators and staff. Must be proficient in fiscal management, personnel manager, supervisory techniques, accepted principal of policing, and law enforcement administration. Successful candidate must maintain a visible profile in the community. Currently hold, or be able to obtain, certification by the Delaware Council on Police Training.
